Windmills on the way to Carlsbad Caverns.

This is the walk down to the opening of the cavern.

This is the seating area for watching the bats emerge from the cave every night.

The entrance gets bigger, but the photos still cannot make your hair stand up.

More impressive!

Now it starts getting scary

These pictures are not coming out like I wish they would. Wait a minute! I just happen to have my Cannon Powershot A580 instruction manual in my pocket. Give me five minutes to make the proper adjustments.

O K, I think I have it now.

The ladder to the lower cave

Dead Bats

Deeper and deeper

Writing on the wall from 1925

This passage was difficult carrying my camera and snacks.

Here I was afraid of scratching my camera lense.

The night after going into the cavern, I went back just before dark to watch the bats leave the cave. This early in the spring there is only a small number of bats that inhabit the cave. More will be migrating into the cave in the later weeks. It's hard to imagine anything more spectacular than what i witnessed that afternoon. The bats were emerging by the thousands. If you are in the Carlsbad area during the summer, I highly recommend going to witness this natural phenomenon. Unfortunately you cannot have any cameras or video equipment
